The past we are proud of
Our rich history is more than hundreds of developed and implemented large projects in the fuel and energy industry not only in Ukraine, but also in many countries of the world. Very few companies on the global energy market can boast of such a large, successful and diverse experience in the development of projects of various types power facilities, as KIEP.
The history of the institute, which began back in 1933, is continuously connected with the development of power industry in the former Soviet Union and in the world as a whole. At the beginning of the activity KIEP developed the designs of boiler houses, municipal low-power combined heating and power plants (CHPP). Then there was participation in restoration of power facilities destroyed after the Second World War. Starting from the 1950s of the last century, there was the development of modern at that time designs of thermal power plants (TPPs and CHPPs) of medium and large capacity both in Ukraine and in many republics of the former Soviet Union and beyond: Cuba, Iraq, Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia and other countries. The total capacity of such facilities built upon KIEP designs is almost 70 MW of electric power.
At the end of the 1960s, the institute began to master the nuclear power industry, taking part in designing of the first nuclear power plants (NPP) in the Soviet Union - the Beloyarsk and Novovoronezh NPPs. However, since the 1970s, KIEP began to independently design nuclear power plants. The first projects of the institute in nuclear power energy were the Ignalina NPP with RBMK-1500 (turbine house) in Lithuania and the Paksh NPP (with VVER-440 reactors), built in Hungary. In the future, starting from the 1980s, the amount of projects in atomic energy was growing rapidly, and the institute simultaneously started the development of several nuclear power plant designs with VVER-1000 reactors: Khmelnytskyy NPP, Rivne NPP and Chyhyryn NPP in Ukraine, Belene NPP in Bulgaria, Kudankulam NPP in India, most of which have been built and are successfully operated to this day. At the same time, KIEP developed a number of nuclear CHP (NCHP) designs, namely: Kyiv, Odesa, Baku and Minsk NCHPs; the construction of some of them was started in the Soviet Union, but then stopped in the early 90s.
Since the beginning of the 1990s, already in independent Ukraine, KIEP has taken a leading position as the general designer of many power facilities, carrying out work on the modernization of Trypilska and Ladyzhynska TPPs, Kyiv CHPP-5, CHPP-6 and other thermal power plants in Ukraine. A significant amount of work during this period fell on the KIEP’s engineering support for the operation of all NPPs of Ukraine, the implementation of works to improve nuclear and radiation safety and increase the efficiency of NPPs operation. A significant achievement of KIEP in 2002-2004 as a general designer was the provision of engineering support to SE NNEGC "Energoatom" during the completion of construction and commissioning of Unit No. 4 at the Rivne NPP and Unit No. 2 at the Khmelnytskyy NPP.
After the accident at the Chornobyl NPP in 1986, KIEP acquired the status of the main designer of the Chornobyl NPP in 1987 and since then has been carrying out a large amount of work at this NPP. In the early 2000s, the institute developed designs for the decommissioning of power units of the Chornobyl NPP, including the development of designs for facilities for the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel at this NPP. A special place in the KIEP activity at the Chornobyl NPP, since 1987, has been occupied by Power Unit No. 4 (the “Shelter” Object), which was destroyed after the accident. Together with the “Novarka” consortium (France), in 2013, KIEP developed a design for a unique structure – the New Safe Confinement (NSC), which is located over the Power Unit No. 4, and its development ensured reliable protection of the environment and the population from potential radiation exposure of the "Shelter" Object.
From past years to the present, the history of KIEP activity is continuously associated with Ukraine, reflecting the institute's contribution to the formation and sustainable development of its power industry.
