KIEP and NUKEM Technologies Resume Cooperation and Align Strategic Directions for Partnership in the Nuclear Energy Sector

On November 19, 2025, on the initiative of the German company NUKEM Technologies (NUKEM), there was a meeting held in KIEP office to discuss the aspects of cooperation between KIEP and NUKEM in the field of nuclear energy including radioactive waste management issues.

This meeting became only possible after the Russian owner of NUKEM was substituted with a new one represented by Muroosystems Corporation, Tokyo, Japan, in May 2024.

NUKEM is one of the leading companies in developing unique equipment for RAW management systems implemented for many nuclear power facilities worldwide and in Ukraine, Currently, JSC KIEP is involed in constructing a radioactive waste processing complex (RWPC) at the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant using equipment is supposed to be supplied by NUKEM.

Mr. Ninomiya Nobuaki, the Managing Director of NUKEM noted that the purpose of the meeting with JSC KIEP, a well-known company in the global energy sector and successful in implementing projects in the field of radioactive waste management was to establish long-term mutually beneficial relations for cooperation between NUKEM and JSC KIEP in the field of nuclear energy.

During the meeting, Yuriy Sapozhnikov, Chairman of the JSC KIEP Board stated that the renewal of business cooperation between JSC KIEP and NUKEM was very important in the context of implementing current radioactive waste management projects in Ukraine and in the countries such as Bulgaria, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Estonia, and other countries that use nuclear energy.

He also noted that Mr. Ninomiya Nobuaki's visit to Kyiv at such a difficult time demonstrated the unwavering support of Ukraine and Ukrainian experts by the nuclear community and in fact it was the first face-to-face meeting at the institute after the full-scale invasion in Ukraine started by the russian federation.

The parties provided information about their companies, discussed the on-going projects including the RWPC associated activities at the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant, discussed the areas of future mutually beneficial cooperation and agreed to sign a Memorandum of Cooperation, scheduling their next business meeting early in 2026.
